Fasting 2013

Everything in Christ Must Live!

“Fasting For A Fruit Producing Harvest”

“But his delight is in the law of the law of the Lord; and in his law doeth he meditate day and night.  And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” (Psalm 1:2,3)

Lenten season is period of self-denial, sacrifice, and spiritual cleansing. Join the members of FBCSO as we empty out the dead things from our lives and seek God’s face for an increase harvest of favor. This is our year to take the land. Help us as we humble ourselves before the Lord.

What is Fasting?

Fasting is a voluntary and deliberate abstinence from food for the purpose of concentrated prayer. So many of us abstain from food, but forget our purpose is for concentrated prayer. Fasting and prayer causes one to become much more spiritually sensitive to the Lord, causing more power in one’s life to combat the forces of satan. So keep in mind that a fast is a means by which our prayers maybe more perfectly focused. When we fast, God responds to our sincerity and willingness to humble ourselves. The voluntary humbling and afflicting of the soul in an individual, community and nation release his mercy and grace.

Pure Motives

When we begin to fast, we should never fast to impress others or for selfish reasons. We also should be in the proper mental attitude. We must not see the fast as a punishment even though our bodies may rebel at first. Fasting should be viewed as a precious opportunity to get closer to the Lord not distracted by the daily concern of EATING. Only a strong personal relationship with the Living God can keep our commitment to God from becoming oppressive and traditional.

Devotion to God is another pure motive behind fasting. To guarantee our continual personal growth as Christians, we must have a regular personal devotional life. There are many reasons why we should pray daily. The following are just two of them:

1) Our day must begin in prayer, for then God responds, God loves to move in our hearts early. (Psalm 46:4-5; 57:8; 63:1-4) When we begin our day in prayer, we shall have the spiritual strength to carry our responsibilities. (Isaiah 26:9; Psalm 119:11, 130)

2) God will speak to us from Scripture if we give Him the opportunity. The morning hours find our minds clear from all of the conflicts of the day; therefore, we are capable of receiving the direction and instruction that can come from His Holy Word.
